|DISCUSSION| The Conflicting Art of Reviewing

It would appear I have a talent for not being able to come up with clever titles.

And it has also come to a point in blogging where everything is making no sense to me. There isn't a issue with blogging itself, but rather how I go about reviewing my books on this blog. This is a problem that has been plaguing me for a while. You might have noticed a lack of reviews, a part of the reason is because I'm trying to work out a style that will not irritate me and will somewhat satisfy me so that I don't take hours typing up a review only to never post it. Another reason that Wake Up at Seven doesn't have as many reviews as it used to when all three of us were here is because, I must admit, I'm pure lazy and fail at this thing called book blogging. 

I sometimes do find myself reading through older reviews (never any of my really old reviews though because they scare me for obvious reasons) and feeling completely confused with myself. How could I hate something in one book and love it in the other? How come I thought this book was a certain way and everybody else seems to think it's the complete opposite? 

Or maybe it never did...

While I was reading my hideously written reviews, I started forming these arguments against what I was saying in my head. Then I started thinking, "If I could defend the opposite feelings in so many ways, how would my lovely dearest (no that is not my trying to flatter all of you wonderful people pshhh) readers react?" 

If you've ever wondered/asked yourself the following questions or had the following thoughts, you've probably had the same problem I had. 

• What if this book isn't moving at the pace of a turtle but instead the scenes I think are slow are necessary to everything? *runs around in panic mode* 

• WHOA HOLD UP. Why do I hate this so much while everyone seems to love this book? AM I READING THE SAME BOOK?! *tears book apart trying to figure out if it's a fake* P.S.: Please do not try this at home. Or anywhere. *holds books protectively* 

• Ughhh this book is so unrealistic. Nothing is making sense, nothing is explained, I don't understand any of this. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING.

But on the other side...

• Ughhh this book has wayyyy too slow and boring. All we get is pages of explanation and explanation. Do I look like I want to know how everything works? HAVEN'T YOU EVER HEARD OF MYSTERY? I might as well be reading realistic fiction and not dystopian. *grumbles*

• This main character is soo whiny. All she does is talk about her feelings and gets frustrated when things don't go her way. GROW UP. Life isn't fair, dear. 

Meanwhile...

*forgets that fact that most people do whine and get upset in reality when things don't go their way* 

• I want to write this quote everywhereeee because I love it. WAIT, what are you saying? IT IS NOT CHEESY. STOP. 

Maybe, just maybe something along the lines of this has happened to you: 

Me: This book was fantastic, and I adored it.

The Other Person: GOD no. Just no. This book is freaking terrible. 

Me:

I just really wanted to use this. I couldn't find one that says Twitter though. *cries*

Despite how it may seem at first, I've finally understood that all the feelings above are perfectly fine. When book bloggers post, they are posting their feelings. They are posting their reviews, they are not posting THE review that everybody will agree on. 

Some point along the way, I began forgetting the reason I began looking into blogging in the first place. I love each and every person who takes the time to read what I have to say, but I started blogging for precisely that reason. To be able to say what I want to say. And yes, maybe you don't agree with what I think but that is completely okay. In fact, I'm more than happy to engage in a conversation with someone who didn't like the book I loved, or vise versa. But it's important to remember that line of respect for other people's opinion, no matter what it is. Don't trample over it because you think yours is correct. 

What I feel might not be what you feel, and I think that's pretty damn awesome, especially when it comes to books. If what I don't like in a book, you like, I encourage you to look more into it. Because then I'll be super happy that I've help the right book connect with the right readers. 

And if I want to feel like a main character is whiny and don't care if it's realistic, then I will. And while I will, I don't always read books to feel like I'm living someone's normal life. Sometimes I just want something...not normal. And if you feel like a book is moving as fast as light while someone else feels like a turtle could beat the pacing in a race, that's fine. Those are your feelings, and you are entitled to express them in a way you deem fit. Because that's what most of us are doing in a review: expressing our feelings. Over-analyzing everything about my review wasn't working for me at all, so I learned to *cue song* just let it gooooo. 

If you feel hesitant on writing a review where you feel like the black sheep, then I would recommend reading few reviews of books you're looking forward to so that you don't feel to heavily influenced to feel one way and then feel conflicted if you don't. 

No matter what opinion on a book you have, a positive one is equally as important as a negative one. I have participated in and seen so many fun arguments for different opinions on books that really showcase passion for reading. These conversations are possible because we can respect other people's opinions, even if we don't agree with them. 

The most important thing I've learned is to write my reviews in a way that represents my feelings. Before anything else, write them for me and don't be afraid to say whatever the hell I want to say. But of course, I will always love all of my wonderful readers forever. *throws chocolate hearts around*

That Time I Joined the Circus was never a book I thought I'd have to suspend my state of disbelief for, but once you do, the story itself can be quite enjoyable. In some way, I guess it's also fitting that the story is about a girl and a circus, and suspension of disbelief is often necessary to fully enjoy the allure of what a circus offers. 

That Time I Joined the Circus is about girl who has to deal with the aftermath of a tragedy and heads off to Florida in the hopes of finding a mother who was never there for her. Stumbling upon the circus she set out to find, Lexi realizes that her mother isn't there, but she ends up traveling with the circus because there isn't exactly a world of options for Lexi to choose from. 

From then on Lexi is suddenly given a job in the circus even though she has no apparent skill, which was strange but I got over it eventually. The characters were generally likable, and my favorite character would probably be Jamie because I do like the charmers. The triples were right behind him, or I guess the twins would be, since we learn little about their brother. There was potential in the brother's character (and I am carefully avoiding having to mention his name because I cannot remember), and I think he could have been a favorite of mine had we spent some time with him. Instead, he's just sort of...there, and that makes me a bit disappointed because I love older brother type characters. But the twins were really great characters, and I loved that they were far kinder than they first appeared to be. But I wonder why Lina was so cold in the beginning, because I don't remember an explanation being given. I also liked Nick's character. 

There's definitely a small issue with realism and how memorable That Time I Joined The Circus is. But for me, I didn't really realize I had those problems until after I finished the story. I was all set and ready to give this a four stars on Goodreads, and then I couldn't remember the Lina's older brother's name (which is why I so carefully avoided mentioning it), I didn't quite understand why certain things turned out the way they did, and there are loose threads that have not been tied up. For the most part, the realistic aspect of Lexi's situation isn't exactly plausible. I don't have any first hand experience at the requirements for joining the circus, but Lexi hasn't finished high school, much less graduated from a circus arts school. But she's simply given a job without any sort of formal assessment of her talents. 

There's strange build-up with the romances, and these moments were everything would be vague and would assume you knew what happened, but meanwhile all I want is just to know exactly what happened that night before the accident with Lexi and Eli. I don't want to make assumptions. 

The romances seems all over the place at first, with Lexi falling in love with one guy, kissing another, and oh look - she still has feelings for somebody she never wanted to see again.  You could argue though that the way the romance was done was realistic in it's portrayal. That sometimes the guy you thought you loved most is not the guy that is best for you, and that it may be someone else who suits who you are currently more. I am slightly frustrated that the love interest and romance that was chosen in the end didn't really invoke any big emotion in me - whether it was happiness or anger, but That Time I Joined The Circus might be for you if you like the friends gradually turning into something more story, which I personally really do. But the romance isn't the main aspect of this book, it is more of a way that Lexi discovers herself further by choosing who is right for her to be with. That Time I Joined The Circus is also strongly focused on friendship and how important it is to have something that can feel like home, which are two themes I really appreciate.  I really love that in the end, Lexi and Nick still text each other and they maintain a strong friendship. 

There was one particular part of the story that I wanted to see unfold, but we don't get anything after the revelation. It's in the spoiler section below, so read at your own risk. You have been warned.

We find out that the lawyer for Lexi's dad turns out to be more than he seems, and that he has any money that Lexi's dad left for her. I thought that was interesting, and I wanted to see Lexi's mom meet with him again. But we don't get any of that, so I'm going off the assumption that Lexi gets the money back or whatever. *pulls out hair*  DO YOU SEE HOW MUCH I HATE GOING OFF ASSUMPTIONS. But essentially, I'd really just would've like to more about the lawyer after Lexi's mom gives the revelation, and that was a bit disappointing.

But man, I'm totally giving bonus points for the Barnes & Noble scene because that was probably my favorite part. The music references throughout the story was a good touch, and the titles were fun. I also thought the way we ended the story was cute.

I'm not sure if I really felt the connection between Jamie and Lina was more than really good friends in the beginning. Even though I knew Lina liked Jamie, I was a bit surprised to see that Jamie returned the feelings, since I didn't pick up on any of that when he was chasing after Lexi. But I thought it was adorabe that they got married in the end, and it gave me some fluffy feels.

Overall, if you are a fan of the idea of circuses, you might want to consider That Time I Joined The Circus. I had no problems with liking the characters, but I did have trouble connecting with some of them beyond surface level. I think That Time I Joined The Circus would've gone over better for some readers had it had more time to flesh out serious matters, without breezing through them or not really fixing them, like Bailey who just so happens not to be around anymore. I've heard some people say that Lexi got through situations too easy, or things were too convenient, but for the most part I didn't mind it because just as life is hard for some, some people are just lucky enough to solve their problems easier than others. The way Lexi found her mother was interesting, for lack of better word, because I had expected Lexi to find her herself somehow. I think that was the one part I thought that having it all taken care of for Lexi was taking away from the importance of the story. The whole reason Lexi went to the circus in the first place is to find her mother, after all. But I guess Lexi does technically find her mom, but if she had waited a little longer, she wouldn't have needed to. 

For what it was, That Time I Joined The Circus is a book I would recommend if you are looking for an easy to read, fun story of a girl who finds who she is in this world and what she wants to do, the right person for her to love, and the people who help her discover herself with some ups and downs along the way and some music references thrown in. That Time I Joined The Circus is Lexi's journey that begins in a circus with great friends, and together they will discover who Lexi is meant to be in a place where magic is made.

Believe is probably my favorite book in the True Believers series. While I did read Believe in a short time, these books seem to be enjoyable but also laced with problems. 

For the most part, if you are a reader who can read without looking too deep into things and you enjoy New Adult, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this series. But if you are a reader who look at words for more than their surface meaning, you'll find that the characters display questionable logic and strange decisions. 

I'm generally someone who can just read a book for pure entertainment and not analyze things for multiple meanings when I want to. I can also be all philosophical and read between lines and look for and appreciate scenes that are more than what first meets the eye. To fully enjoy Believe, you have to be in the mood to read something fun and fast, and try not to find deep meaning behind the character's actions or plot. 

The book rotates between our two main characters, and I liked seeing how Phoenix and Robin thought and I liked getting to see reactions or a look into feelings we wouldn't have gotten had this series been written in one point of view. After waking up in bed with her best friend's boyfriend, Robin is horrified and disgusted and withdraws from the person who used to party and drink without telling anyone why. Robin was generally a likable character, even though she wasn't the strongest. I can also see why she made some of the bad decisions she did, because things like that do happen in this world. There isn't any insta-love in this book, but there is an immediate sense of lust between Robin and Phoenix, and I can even understand why there would be. But what I cannot understand is why Robin would willingly invite Phoenix to stay the night at her apartment without knowing what he went to jail for. Even if the Mann brothers seem to be on good terms with him, I'm certain Phoenix didn't spent time in jail for handing out rainbows and spreading sunshine. Nobody in the entire book seemed to think that it was at least unsafe, and it's obvious to the readers Phoenix wasn't a mass murderer, but Robin had no way of knowing because she wouldn't at least ask him.

"Even if no one else cared about me, I did." 

I like characters like Phoenix who have a strong sense of self-respect, because how can you expect others to love or accept you when you can't first love and accept yourself? I never thought Phoenix would be bad for Robin, but when he says he thinks it's oddly satisfying to see people cry for him, it makes me wonder if maybe he isn't as affected by everything as he claims. His anger problems are touched upon, but I was surprised that he was able to destroy somebody's car with no repercussions. Not saying that the owner of that car didn't deserve it, but I expected somebody to call the police or something along those lines. 

I liked Robin and Phoenix's relationship, and both of them were good for the other. They supported each other, and with a bit of time they managed to build a honest relationship. I was happy that Robin could feel comfortable with Phoenix, although...

"You've screwed us all, man. Now they're all going to expect portraits."  

Now I laughed when I read this line, but I can't help but think that Phoenix didn't think it through completely, because a tattoo of your girlfriend's face when you've only known her for less than two months seems a bit rash. But I guess I can see why Robin was so happy, since I suppose you can look at it as sweet and the tattoo is supposed to be beautiful. But I think a tattoo like that is a commitment that Phoenix should make after they were married and maybe as an anniversary surprise, because you can't just wash something like that await. And I don't want them to break up at all, but if it did happen, there will always be a permanent reminder of what once was on your skin. Not to sound depressing at all. Nope. 

I am depressing myself with my depression talk of fictional characters breaking up. IT MUST NEVER HAPPEN.

Like in Sweet, it was fun to see all the characters from previous books again and you can definitely feel that there is a strong connection not only between family, but also friends. Some relationships are strengthened in Believe, and others broken. And I tried refraining from mentioning him before, because I knew I'd go off on paragraphs of ranting, so I'll settle for just one sentence. Nathan is an asshole. I appreciate artistic characters because I like to draw, and I liked that I could relate to Robin and Phoenix in that aspect. Believe was engaging enough to keep me flipping those pages, and had I started this in the morning, it could have easily been a one sitting read. I was curious and couldn't resist reading the excerpt for Shatter, the next book, and all I'll say is that I'll be reading that one too without a doubt because I'd like to read Kylie's side of the story to tie it all together. And plus it sounds just simply like something I'd enjoy - as I've enjoyed every book in this series. If you love New Adult, this is a series I think would be a shame for you not to try.

Personally, I love when a series has novellas. Essentially to me, they are bonus content when it comes to a series I adored. Sometimes I don't buy the novellas when the first release as e-books because I'm holding out for something like this - a print bind-up. 

I will definitely be buying The Assassin's Blade in hardcover (hopefully it is the same size) to match to rest of my hardcover series. According to Goodreads, a paperback version will be released on March 13th, 2014. But how often are novella collections released in hardcover? I MUST HAVE IT.

My manga pick of the week is…

I feel if I don't get volume 70 of One Piece I'll fall way too far behind on my goal of collecting all the volumes of One Piece currently out by summer. I try to tell myself it is not an unreachable goal (Ihave around a little more than 20 to buy), since my Bleach collection is up to date and I started just a few months ago, and way after One Piece. After One Piece is up to date, I might start working on Naruto and the Chinese versions of the volumes of Katekyo Hitman Reborn not published in English. 

I've already read the contents of this volume, and it's awesome if you can't tell by the cover. We're making our way into Dressrosa and the amazing things that will ensue. 

Also, is it weird that I kinda want a figure of just Doflamingo's laughing head and some feathers from the outfit he wears, like the picture we see in this cover. Oh why am I such a strange child? I MEAN, it's totally normal, I have no clue what you're talking about.

I need all the One Piece volumes so I can do a giant re-read of it and Bleach and other awesome manga series in the summer and make my summer epic. 

I SHALL BE PIRATE KING.

...No actually, I think I'll just hide in a town and hope nobody comes at me with scary Devil Fruit powers.
